Overflow Repair FAQs
Common questions about overflowing tanks and cisterns
Why is water running from my overflow pipe?
A continuous overflow is usually caused by a faulty ball valve or fill valve that is not shutting off when the tank or cistern is full. The water level rises above the overflow and runs outside.
How much water can a running overflow waste?
A continuously running overflow can waste hundreds of litres of water per day. Over a month this can add significantly to your water bill if you are on a meter.
Can I fix an overflow myself?
You can try adjusting the ball valve arm or checking the float. If the valve needs replacing we recommend a qualified plumber. Working on a cold water tank in the loft can be awkward and risky.
Is a running overflow an emergency?
A small drip from an overflow should be fixed promptly but may not need an emergency call out. A continuous flow of water is more serious and risks water damage, particularly from a loft tank.
Why is my toilet constantly running water into the pan?
This is an internal overflow. The fill valve is not shutting off so water flows into the overflow tube and down into the pan. It wastes water and can be noisy. We can repair or replace the fill valve.
What is a Part 1 and Part 2 ball valve?
Part 1 ball valves have the float on the end of a brass arm and are used in cold water tanks. Part 2 ball valves have a plastic float on the side and are more common. We carry both types.
