Heated Towel Rail Faults We Repair
Common heated towel rail problems we diagnose and fix.
Towel Rail Not Heating
The towel rail stays cold even when the heating is on. Usually caused by trapped air, a stuck valve or a balancing issue. We diagnose the cause and restore heat to the rail.
Partially Cold Rail
The bottom rungs are warm but the top rungs are cold. This is trapped air inside the towel rail. Bleeding the rail usually fixes it. If it keeps recurring there may be corrosion producing gas.
Leaking Valve or Connection
Water leaking from the valve, the valve connection or the pipe connection to the towel rail. We tighten, repack or replace the leaking component to stop the leak.
Loose on the Wall
The towel rail has become loose or is pulling away from the wall. Fixings can fail especially in tiled walls. We resecure the rail with proper fixings into the wall behind the tiles.
Electric Element Not Working
On dual fuel or electric towel rails the electric heating element has stopped working. We test the element, thermostat and wiring and replace the faulty component.
Corrosion or Rust Spots
Rust spots or corrosion appearing on a chrome or painted towel rail. This is usually surface corrosion from a damp bathroom environment but can indicate the rail needs replacing.

Heated Towel Rail Repair FAQs
Common questions about heated towel rail repairs
Why is my heated towel rail cold at the top?
This is trapped air inside the towel rail. Towel rails are tall and air naturally rises to the top. Bleed the rail using the bleed valve at the top. If it keeps happening there may be corrosion producing gas in the system.
How do I bleed a heated towel rail?
Use a radiator bleed key on the bleed valve at the top of the rail. Turn slowly until air hisses out. When water starts to come out close the valve. Check the boiler pressure afterwards on sealed systems.
Why is my towel rail leaking from the valve?
The valve gland may need tightening or the internal seal may have worn out. If tightening doesn't work the valve needs replacing. We carry common towel rail valves and can replace the leaking valve.
Why has my towel rail come loose from the wall?
Towel rails carry weight from the rail itself plus wet towels. If the fixings were not into solid masonry or proper studwork fixings they can work loose. We resecure the rail with fixings appropriate for your wall type.
Why is the electric element not working on my dual fuel rail?
The electric heating element, thermostat or fused spur may have failed. We test each component and replace the faulty part. If the element has burnt out it needs replacing with a matching wattage element.
Can you replace a heated towel rail that is beyond repair?
Yes. If the towel rail is corroded, leaking from the body or beyond economic repair we can supply and fit a replacement. We will match the existing pipe centres where possible to avoid retiling.
