Hot Water Cylinder Faults We Repair
Common problems with vented copper hot water cylinders.
No Hot Water
The cylinder is full of cold water but not heating up. Usually caused by a failed immersion heater, a boiler fault, a failed motorised valve or an airlock in the primary heating coil.
Leaking Cylinder
Water leaking from the cylinder body, connections, the immersion heater boss or the cylinder flange. Leaks cause water damage and loss of hot water pressure. We trace and repair the leak.
Discoloured Hot Water
Brown or rusty hot water from copper cylinders usually means internal corrosion. We inspect the cylinder, check the sacrificial anode and advise whether the cylinder can be repaired or needs replacement.
Poor Hot Water Flow
Weak hot water flow from taps and showers. Can be caused by an airlock, a partially closed isolation valve, a scaled cylinder outlet or a blocked filter on the hot water supply.
Cylinder Overheating
Hot water too hot or cylinder making banging noises. Usually a failed cylinder thermostat, a stuck motorised valve or a wiring fault. We diagnose and repair the control system.
Cold Water in Cylinder
The cylinder fills with cold water but the boiler does not heat it. We check the motorised valve, the cylinder thermostat, the programmer settings and the primary pipework for blockages.

Cylinder Repair FAQs
Common questions about hot water cylinder repairs
Why do I have no hot water from my cylinder?
The most common causes are a failed immersion heater, a faulty motorised valve, a boiler that is not heating the primary coil, an airlock or a failed cylinder thermostat. We test each component to find the cause.
Can you repair a leaking hot water cylinder?
It depends where the leak is. Leaks from connections, immersion heater bosses and flanges can usually be repaired. A leak from the cylinder body means internal corrosion and the cylinder usually needs replacing.
How long does a cylinder repair take?
Replacing an immersion heater or thermostat takes about an hour. Diagnosing a more complex fault with motorised valves and controls takes longer. Most repairs are completed within two hours.
What type of cylinder do I have?
Most UK homes have either a vented copper cylinder fed from a cold water storage tank in the loft or an unvented cylinder that runs directly from the mains water supply. We can identify your cylinder type when we visit.
Why is my hot water brown?
Brown hot water from a copper cylinder means internal corrosion. The copper is breaking down from the inside. We check the sacrificial anode and the cylinder condition. A corroded cylinder usually needs replacement.
Can I still use the immersion heater if the boiler has failed?
Most vented copper cylinders have an immersion heater as a backup. If yours is working it can provide hot water while we repair the boiler side. If the immersion heater has also failed we can replace it.
