Immersion Heater Faults We Repair
Diagnosing and fixing all types of immersion heater problems.
Failed Immersion Element
The heating element inside the cylinder has burned out causing no hot water. Common in older copper cylinders where the element has reached the end of its service life. We diagnose and replace the element.
Faulty Immersion Thermostat
The thermostat that controls the water temperature has failed. Water may be cold, lukewarm or dangerously hot. We test the thermostat and replace it with a new one set to the correct temperature.
Tripped Safety Cut Out
The overheat safety cut out has tripped cutting power to the immersion heater. This is a safety feature that prevents the water from overheating. We reset the cut out and investigate why it tripped.
Corroded Immersion Boss
The threaded boss where the immersion heater screws into the cylinder is corroded or leaking. We carefully remove the old heater, clean the boss and fit the new heater with a new sealing washer.
Limescale on Element
In hard water areas limescale builds up on the immersion heater element reducing its efficiency and causing it to overheat and fail. We descale the boss fitting and recommend a scale reducing element.
Wiring Fault
Burnt or loose wiring at the immersion heater connection. Can cause intermittent hot water, tripped circuit breakers or complete failure. We check and remake the electrical connections safely.

Immersion Heater FAQs
Common questions about immersion heater repairs
How do I know if my immersion heater has failed?
The most common sign is no hot water when the immersion heater is switched on. You can also check by seeing if the immersion heater switch lights up and whether the circuit breaker has tripped at the consumer unit.
How long does an immersion heater last?
Immersion heater elements typically last five to ten years depending on water quality and how often they are used. In hard water areas limescale buildup can shorten their life. Thermostats can fail earlier than the element.
Can you replace just the thermostat?
Yes. If the immersion element is still working but the thermostat has failed we can fit a new thermostat. This is a quick repair that restores controlled hot water without replacing the whole immersion heater.
Why does my immersion heater keep tripping the electrics?
A tripping circuit breaker usually means the immersion element has developed a fault and is leaking current to earth or the wiring connections are burnt. We test the element with an insulation tester to confirm the fault.
Can I use the immersion heater as a backup to my boiler?
Yes. Most vented copper cylinders have an immersion heater fitted as standard. Even if your boiler heats the cylinder normally you can use the immersion heater as a backup if the boiler breaks down.
Should I turn off my immersion heater if it is not working?
Yes. Switch off the immersion heater at the isolation switch or consumer unit. If the thermostat has failed the element could run continuously and overheat the water which wastes electricity and could damage the cylinder.
