Smart Thermostat Faults We Repair

Common smart thermostat problems we diagnose and fix.

Thermostat Offline

The thermostat has lost connection to the Wi-Fi network or the app shows it as offline. You cannot control the heating from your phone. Usually a Wi-Fi, router or hub connection issue.

Heating Won't Come On

The thermostat display shows it is calling for heat but the boiler does not fire. Can be a fault with the receiver by the boiler, a wiring problem or a communication failure between the thermostat and receiver.

Heating Won't Turn Off

The heating continues to run even when the thermostat is turned down or the schedule says it should be off. Usually a stuck relay in the receiver keeping the boiler switched on.

Display Blank or Frozen

The thermostat screen is blank, frozen or showing an error code. Could be a battery issue, a power supply fault or the thermostat has locked up and needs resetting.

Wrong Temperature Reading

The thermostat shows a temperature that does not match the room. It might be reading too hot from being near a heat source or too cold from a draught. Relocating the thermostat may be needed.

App Not Connecting

The thermostat works manually but the app on your phone cannot connect to control it. Issues with the manufacturer's cloud service, the home hub bridge or the Wi-Fi connection.

Smart Thermostat Repair FAQs

Common questions about smart thermostat repairs

Why is my smart thermostat showing as offline?

The most common causes are the thermostat losing Wi-Fi connection, the router being too far away, the hub or receiver losing power or the manufacturer's cloud service being down. We check each systematically.

Why won't my heating turn on even though the thermostat says it is calling for heat?

This usually means the receiver or hub by the boiler is not switching the boiler on. The thermostat is sending the signal but the receiver is not acting on it. This can be a receiver fault, a wiring issue or a pairing problem.

Why does my heating stay on when the thermostat is off?

The most likely cause is a stuck relay in the receiver keeping the boiler switched on. Power cycling the receiver may temporarily fix it but the relay will stick again. The receiver usually needs replacing.

How do I reset my smart thermostat?

Most smart thermostats have a reset option in the settings menu. Hive can be reset from the hub. Nest has a restart option. Tado resets via the app. If a reset does not work we can diagnose and repair the fault.

Can a smart thermostat be repaired or does it need replacing?

Many faults can be repaired. Receiver relays can be replaced. Wiring can be corrected. Pairing can be reset. If the thermostat itself has failed and is out of warranty replacement is usually more cost effective than component level repair.

Will replacing a smart thermostat affect my boiler?

No. Replacing a faulty smart thermostat does not affect the boiler. The new thermostat connects to the same wiring. We ensure the new thermostat is correctly paired and controls the heating properly.
