What is the difference between vented and unvented cylinders?
A vented cylinder is fed from a cold water storage tank in the loft and relies on gravity for hot water pressure. An unvented cylinder connects directly to the mains water supply and delivers hot water at mains pressure throughout your home.
Do I need good mains water pressure for an unvented cylinder?
You need a minimum mains flow rate of around 20 litres per minute and pressure of 2 bar or above for an unvented cylinder to work well. We measure your mains flow and pressure before recommending an unvented cylinder.
Is an unvented cylinder safe?
Yes. Unvented cylinders have multiple safety devices including a pressure relief valve, temperature relief valve, expansion vessel and safety discharge pipework. They must be installed by a G3 qualified engineer and are tested to strict safety standards.
How long does installation take?
A vented to unvented cylinder conversion including removing the loft tank and associated pipework typically takes a full day. A like for like unvented cylinder replacement takes about five to six hours.
Will I get better shower pressure?
Yes. This is the main benefit of an unvented cylinder. You get mains pressure hot water at every shower and tap. If you currently have a gravity fed shower the improvement is significant.
Does an unvented cylinder need servicing?
Yes. Unvented cylinders should be serviced annually to check the safety devices, expansion vessel pressure and discharge pipework. The service also checks the cylinder thermostat and immersion heater. We offer annual unvented cylinder servicing.
